Mold Core Pins used for creating holes in parts should be through-hardened rather than nitrided. While most pins and sprue-puller pins are nitrided with an exterior case hardness of 65 to 74 Rockwell C, Mold Core Pins typically have a hardness ranging from 40 to 55 Rc. The case hardening is typically only 0.001 to 0.007 inches deep and can be extremely brittle, potentially causing edge chipping during production.
