Careful selection of pin types is crucial for optimal performance. Some suppliers claim their Mold Core Pins are through-hardened but specify surface hardness of 62-65 Rc with core hardness of 50-52 Rc. Discrepancies between supplier catalogs, websites, and actual products are common, so it's essential to verify diameter measurements to four decimal places and occasionally check Rockwell hardness on both diameter and center face.
Mold Core Pins are typically manufactured from H-13 or M-2 tool steel. Standard H-13 pins feature 30-35 Rc hardness throughout, while higher hardness options include H-13 pins at 50-55 Rc and M-2 pins at 60-63 Rc hardness. For applications where pins butt against cavities or other pins, harder hardness is preferred. When pins enter holes in cavities or other components, softer pins are recommended as they wear faster, making pin replacement more cost-effective than cavity hole repair.
