Special medical fiber available in a large range of diameters from 200µm to 1500µm HCW fibers.

A medical fiber probe is a length of optical fiber protected by a coating or jacket with two specifically prepared ends. One end is typically equipped with a connector interfacing the laser, while the other (distal) end is cleaved, polished, or may feature a special design (angle, side-fire, sphere, protective glass, etc.).

Selecting the appropriate fiber requires consideration of:

  • Laser source specifications: Wavelengths, power level, spot size, input and output NA
  • Design requirements: Maximum external diameter, length, specific design, bend radius
  • Environmental factors: Temperature, chemical exposure, biocompatibility, sterilization method

Hicorpwell Special Large Core Diameter Fibers

These fibers feature a silica core, hard polymer cladding, and ETFE coating. Their large core diameter and high NA (0.37) provide efficient coupling to laser sources. While HCW fibers can handle high power, all-silica fibers are better suited for high-power applications.

The polymer cladding construction offers high tensile strength, excellent flexibility, and small bend radius for precise placement in the patient's body. This design is cost-effective, allowing use of low-cost devices and connectors ("One Shot SMA") with easy termination procedures for disposable probes.

Medical applications using fiber optic delivery with high-power lasers (Nd:YAG, diode, Ho:YAG) for tissue alteration or vaporization are increasing. The laser power damage threshold of pure silica is approximately 1 GW/cm² for pulsed lasers and 2 MW/cm² for continuous operation.

Achieving high power transmission requires proper beam focusing into the fiber core. Poor alignment, focus, or spot quality can quickly damage the optical fiber and connector, making fiber selection critical.

Advantages of Hicorpwell Silica Fibers

All-silica fibers improve power handling and wavelength range compared to Hicorpwell fibers. For maximum power transmission, the beam must be properly focused into the fiber core. While power levels continue to increase, some laser energy may enter the cladding. With Hicorpwell construction, polymer cladding can burn and destroy the probe. In contrast, all-silica fibers with higher core-to-clad ratio (1.1 to 1.2) can accept some energy in the cladding without damage. For optimal performance, the spot diameter should fill no more than 2/3 of the fiber's core.
