Ultrasonic Welding is a joining process in which two components are held together, oscillatory shear stresses of ultrasonic frequency are applied to interface to cause coalescence. This oscillatory motion breaks down any surface films to allow intimate contact and strong metallurgical bonding between surfaces.(primitive conditions for bonding between two metals to occure).
You may ask about the temperature....it will be far below the melting point of the metal in this case. We use no filler wire, no flux, no shielding gas (advantages over other process) but this process is limited to soft metals like aluminum, copper etc.
It has some specific applications
--> Wire terminatios and splicing in electrical and electronic industry (so we need not to go for sluggish soldering)
--->Assembling of aluminum sheet metal panels in automotive industry.
Unlike resistance welding, the ultrasonic vibration removes oxide film on the metal surface and scatters surface layer impurities in order to create a state of solid-phase welding through the attraction among the metal atoms.ultrasonic metal welder is based on principle of ultrasonic vibrations. Two metal parts are held between Ultrasonic vibrating tool horn & knurled fixture. At a time pressure is provided vertically to the vibrations. Due to this, parts ate scrubbed against each other oxide layer is being removed & two parts get joined.
So Welding is being done without losing properties of material & without adding any proper

Ultrasonic has been well accepted as a cold welding technique for continuous welding of solar thermal components which unchanged the basic property of the copper tube and the copper sheet.Without using any external solder or adhesive, the metallurgical bond between the two coppers / aluminum is achieved by ultrasonic technique. This ensures a very high degree of thermal efficiency. The resultant weld is continuous and there are no dry spots. The ultrasonic bond is achieved at a molecular level and as there is no external material, even the small width of the weld provides good transfer of the heat.
