The thermal protection switch is typically located on A/C compressor housings, used to prevent compressor damage (overheat) through internal friction. This switch senses the compressor case temperature and interrupts the electrical circuit when the temperature reaches a predetermined threshold.

The thermal protection switch protects against overload. In these overload relays (also referred to as "solder pot relays"), the motor current passes through a small heater winding.
