The thermal protection switch is typically located on A/C compressor housings to prevent compressor damage from overheating caused by internal friction. The switch senses compressor case temperature and interrupts the electrical circuit when a predetermined temperature is reached.

Thermal protection switches protect against overload. In these overload relays (also called "solder pot relays"), motor current passes through a small heater winding.
