How Surge Protection Devices Work
When transient voltage occurs on the protected circuit, the SPD limits the transient voltage and diverts current back to its source or ground. The device contains non-linear components that transition between high and low impedance states. Under normal operating voltages, SPDs remain in high-impedance state without affecting the system. During voltage transients, the SPD enters conduction (low impedance) state to divert surge current, clamping voltage to safer levels. After transient diversion, the SPD automatically resets to high-impedance state.
