Product Description

Oval Eye Nut HDG | Drop Forged Poleline Hardware | IEEE C135.80 & CSA C83

The Yokelink Drop Forged Oval Eye Nut is an indispensable component in poleline construction, primarily used for dead-ending applications, back-guying, and attaching suspension insulators.
The Oval Eye Nut manufactured in strict accordance with ANSI/IEEE C135.80 specifications for utility fasteners, our oval eye nuts are integrally drop-forged from high-yield carbon steel. This manufacturing process aligns the grain structure of the steel, providing exceptional tensile strength capable of standing the extreme loads of transmission and distribution lines. They are designed to thread perfectly onto standard machine bolts or double arming bolts.

The large, smooth oval eye accommodates a wide variety of clevises, shackles, and insulator fittings without causing excessive wear. Every nut is tapped with standard UNC threads and fully Hot Dip Galvanized to ASTM A153 to ensure decades of reliability, rust-free service in severe outdoor environments.

Key Technical Features of Oval Eye Nuts

Industry Standard: Fully compliant with ANSI/IEEE C135.80.

Manufacturing: Drop-forged carbon steel for superior tensile strength.

Application: Used for dead-ending and attaching insulators to threaded bolts.

Threads: Standard 5/8 or 3/4 UNC threads tapped straight and true.

Corrosion Protection: Hot Dip Galvanized (HDG) to ASTM A153.

Production Process of Oval Eye Nuts

The production of oval eye nut starts with selecting high‑quality carbon or alloy steel round bar, which is cut into proper blanks and then hot forged into a rough shape with an oval eye and cylindrical body under high pressure. After trimming excess flash and calibrating the overall shape, internal threads are precisely tapped or rolled inside the nut body. The semi-finished product then undergoes heat treatment including quenching and tempering to enhance tensile strength, hardness and toughness. Finally, it is hot‑dip galvanized in accordance with ASTM A153 for corrosion resistance, followed by dimensional inspection, thread gauge testing, hardness check and visual examination before packaging.

Yokelink Quality Control and Testing Equipments for Oval Eyenuts

We don't just reference standards; we also verify them in practice: each batch of products undergoes destructive tensile testing in our internal laboratory to ensure load performance exceeds the minimum requirements of IEEE C135.2 or CSA C83 specification; we use optical comparators to ensure the geometric accuracy of chamfered tips and rolled threads, enabling convenient on-site installation; at the same time, we conduct comprehensive testing on Rockwell hardness, coating thickness, and other parameters, and each shipment is accompanied by the original manufacturer's material specifications (MTRs) and quality inspection reports, with all data traceable back to the raw material furnace number.

Application of Oval Eye Nut

Yokelink Oval eye nut is a widely used connecting fitting in overhead transmission lines, pole hardware and guying systems. It is mainly used to connect anchor rods, stay rods, insulator assemblies and other tension components, providing a safe and reliable hinged connection point. With high strength and good toughness, it can bear long-term tension and outdoor load stably. After hot-dip galvanizing, it has excellent anti-corrosion performance and long service life. It is suitable for various power line construction and maintenance projects, ensuring safe and stable operation of the whole line.

Yokelink Product Quality Inspection Report

We provide comprehensive inspection services for machine bolts, including SGS test bolts and formal Production Part Inspect Report (PPIR). The SGS tests verify the bolts’ compliance with international standards like ASTM A307 and IEEE C135.80, covering mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The PPIR details all inspection items, ensuring each machine bolt meets dimensional, performance and quality requirements, providing reliable quality assurance for overhead line and industrial applications.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Why is IEEE C135.80 compliance important for an Oval Eye Nut?

A: The ANSI/IEEE C135.80 standard dictates the strict metallurgical, dimensional, and strength requirements for utility fasteners used in overhead line construction. An Oval Eye Nut that meets this standard guarantees that it has been manufactured with the correct drop-forged carbon steel, possesses the proper tensile strength for deadending applications, and features accurately tapped threads that will mate perfectly with other standardized poleline hardware, preventing catastrophic failures on the grid.

Q2: Are Yokelink Oval Eye Nuts forged or cast?

A: Our standard utility-grade Oval Eye Nuts are drop-forged from high-quality carbon steel. Drop forging provides a significantly higher tensile strength and impact resistance compared to casting, which is crucial for safety-critical applications in power grids.

Q3: Why do the threads on galvanized eye nuts seem slightly loose before installation?

A: This is intentional. All our Hot Dip Galvanized (HDG) eye nuts are tapped slightly oversize (over-tapped) after the galvanizing process. This extra clearance is engineered so the nut will smoothly thread onto the thick zinc coating of a Hot Dip Galvanized machine bolt or double arming bolt without binding or stripping in the field.

Q4: How much tension can a 5/8" drop-forged Oval Eye Nut withstand?

A: The holding capacity of a utility-grade eye nut is engineered to meet or exceed the minimum tensile strength of the corresponding bolt it attaches to. For a standard 5/8" drop-forged oval eye nut compliant with IEEE C135.80, it is designed to easily match or surpass the 13,500 lbs minimum tensile strength requirement of a standard 5/8" utility machine bolt or double arming bolt, ensuring the nut is never the weak link in your deadend assembly.

Q5: Can I attach an Oval Eye Nut directly to the top of an Anchor Rod?

A: Yes, Oval Eye Nuts are frequently threaded onto the above-ground end of standard threaded anchor rods. However, there is a critical distinction: you should only use an Oval Eye Nut if you are attaching a clevis, shackle, or insulator to the anchor rod. If your design requires the steel guy wire to be wrapped directly through the eye, you must use a Thimble Eye Nut instead, which has a contoured groove to prevent the guy wire from kinking and breaking under high tension.
