Rupture Disk Safety Circulating Valve for Oil Well Downhole Testing
The rupture disk (RD) safety circulating valve is an essential component of drill stem testing (DST) toolstrings, combining the functions of both a safety valve and circulating valve. This specialized equipment operates as a safety mechanism when annulus pressure reaches predetermined levels, isolating the workstring below the tool while establishing communication between the annulus and workstring above the tool.
Dual-Function Operation
The valve serves dual critical functions in downhole operations:
- Safety Valve Function: Automatically activates when annulus pressure reaches preset values to isolate lower workstring sections
- Circulating Valve Function: Converts to circulating mode when ball valve section is removed, enabling fluid communication through circulating ports
Three-Section Design Architecture
- Power Section: Features power mandrel case and rupture disk rated for various pressure applications. Rupture disk bursts at predetermined pressure, allowing annulus pressure to activate the power mandrel, which closes the ball valve and opens circulating ports
- Circulating Section: Contains sealed ports that become exposed when power mandrel moves downward, establishing annulus-to-workstring communication
- Safety Valve Section: Comprises ball valve, operating pins, and collet fingers that work in sequence to ensure secure valve closure and port opening
