RD Circulating Valve for Drill Stem Testing
The RD Circulating Valve is an essential component of drill stem testing tools designed for well completion operations. This specialized valve operates using annulus pressure to activate the rupture disc mechanism, which then drives the circulating mandrel forward to open communication ports between the annulus and workstring.
Valve Structure & Operation
The RD Circulating Valve consists of two primary sections:
- Power Section: Features a power mandrel case and rupture disc calibrated for specific pressure applications. When the rupture disc bursts at predetermined pressure, annulus pressure activates the power mandrel to open circulating ports
- Circulating Section: Contains sealed ports that become exposed when the power mandrel moves downward, enabling fluid communication between annulus and workstring

Safety Testing Procedures
- Gradually increase pressure during testing - hold at 20MPa for one minute, then maintain each 10MPa increment for one minute until reaching rated pressure
- Position tool in test pit with protective board covering pressure test plug
- Ensure all personnel maintain safe distance from plugs and joints during testing
- Establish isolation barriers in test area - restrict access to authorized operators only
- Implement additional isolation measures if personnel must remain in test area to prevent equipment ejection
