Austenitic Type Stainless Steel

Austenitic stainless steel is one of the largest category of stainless steels, covering about two-thirds of total stainless steel production. They possess an microstructure, a face-centered cubic crystal structure.

This micro-structure is by alloying steel with sufficient nickel or manganese andto maintain an austenitic microstructure at all temperatures, ranging from region to the melting point. Thus, austenitic stainless steels are none hardenable by heat treatment since they microstructure at all temperature environments.

Usages

Stainless steels are cheap than austenitic steels and present in commercial products, which include:

Building components, such as roofing, and chimney ducts

Power plates in solid oxide fuel cells operating temperatures around 700 °C (1,292 °F) (high-chromium ferritics containing 22% Cr)

Architectural andapplications (Type 430, which contains 17% Cr)

Household goods, including kitchenware, sinks, and major appliances

Automobile exhaust pipes (Type 409 are used in North America; stabilized grades 441 are used in Europe)

Nitrogen-Alloyed Martensitic Stainless Steels

Replacing some carbon in martensitic stainless steels by nitrogen is a recent development. The limited solubility of nitrogen can be increased by the pressure electroslag refining process, in which melting is carried out. Steel containing up to 0.411% nitrogen is achieved, lead higher hardness and higher corrosion resistance. Though PER is expensive, lower but nitrogen contents have been achieved by argon oxygen decarburization process.
