Product Description

Product Overview

Sapphire tubes are precision-engineered components made from single-crystal aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), featuring outstanding hardness, optical transparency, and chemical stability. With a Mohs hardness of 9, sapphire is second only to diamond, offering superior resistance to wear, corrosion, and high temperatures. These tubes combine optical clarity and mechanical durability, making them indispensable for demanding applications in optics, semiconductors, lasers, and harsh industrial environments.

Sapphire tubes maintain excellent light transmission from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR) wavelengths (190 nm – 5 μm), along with exceptional structural integrity under extreme conditions. Their high melting point (~2050°C) and chemical inertness ensure reliable operation where conventional glass or quartz materials fail.

Manufacturing Principle

Sapphire tubes are typically grown using KY (Kyropoulos) or EFG (Edge-defined Film-fed Growth) methods.

  • KY Method: Produces high-purity, large-diameter sapphire crystals with minimal internal stress, suitable for precision optical or vacuum applications.

  • EFG Method: Enables the direct growth of near-net-shape tubular structures, improving yield and reducing machining costs.

After crystal growth, the sapphire tubes undergo precision grinding, lapping, and polishing to achieve accurate dimensions, optical transparency, and smooth inner and outer surfaces. The final products can be customized for outer diameter, wall thickness, and length according to customer requirements.

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between sapphire and quartz tubes?
A: Sapphire is much harder and more temperature-resistant than quartz. It also provides a broader optical transmission range and higher mechanical durability, ideal for extreme environments.

Q2: Can sapphire tubes be used under vacuum or high pressure?
A: Yes. Due to their high compressive strength and hermetic sealing properties, sapphire tubes perform exceptionally well under vacuum or high-pressure conditions.

Q3: Are coatings available for specific optical wavelengths?
A: Yes. Anti-reflective (AR), high-reflective (HR), and DLC coatings can be applied to meet optical design or durability needs.

Q4: Do sapphire tubes conduct electricity?
A: No. Sapphire is an excellent electrical insulator, suitable for electronic and high-voltage applications.
