Steam methane reforming (SMR) associated with the PSA purification technology is the most economical and environmental and robust process for the hydrogen generation worldwide. It dominates the hydrogen demand in worldwide.

 

The feedstock, kindly sort of light hydrocarbons, such as natural gas or LPG or naphtha, is desulphurized and mixed with steam and converted into the syngas in the presence of Ni-based [nickel] catalyst. Then, a heat recovery system [section] is used to recover high-quality heat from the syngas and generate the process steam. Subsequently, the cooled syngas is fed to a CO-shift converter where the CO reacts with the steam and is converted into the CO2 and extra hydrogen. The resulting gas is further cooled down to the ambient temperature, and then a PSA unit is used to purify the hydrogen to a desirable purity.
