■ Urolithiasis, or kidney stones, Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a minimally invasive urology procedure intended to remove stones from the kidney and proximal ureter which are less amiable to other endourological modalities, specifically large stones, or in the presence of abnormal anatomy. This procedure requires real-time ultrasound and/or X-ray guidance and is usually preceded with a CT scan for diagnosis.
■ This procedure has been performed on many patients over the last several years and is accepted standard of care for patients with kidney stones that are large, very firm, or resistant to other forms of stone treatment. As such it has replaced open operations for kidney stones in the vast majority of patients.
