Metallurgical Structure
Austenitic stainless steels (TP304/304L) have a face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure. The high chromium and nickel content stabilizes the austenitic phase, making the material non-magnetic and providing excellent toughness. The low carbon content (TP304L) minimizes carbide precipitation (sensitization) during welding, ensuring good corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone. The molybdenum in TP316/316L enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.
