Disadvantages of PP Jars
-
Poor Oxygen Barrier: PP is not a great barrier against gases like oxygen, which can limit its use for products that are highly sensitive to oxidation (like some vitamins or certain foods). This can be improved with special coatings or multi-layer structures.
-
Lower Clarity (Unless Treated): Natural PP is not crystal clear like PET or glass. Achieving high clarity requires additional processing, which increases cost.
-
Environmental Concerns: Like all plastics, PP is derived from fossil fuels. While it is recyclable (#5), its recycling rates are often lower than for PET (#1) and HDPE (#2), depending on local recycling programs.
