Introduction and characteristics of Tungsten Alloy Wire

The tungsten content of heavy tungsten alloys ranges from 90% to 98%, which is the reason for their high density (16.5 to 19.00g/CC). Nickel, iron and/or copper are used as metal adhesive substrates to hold fragile tungsten particles together, making the tungsten alloy ductile and easy to work. Nickel-iron is the most commonly used additive, with a ratio of 7Ni:3Fe or 8Ni :2Fe (weight ratio).

 

The usual process for preparing heavy tungsten alloys involves mixing the desired amount of tungsten, iron, nickel or copper powder and then cold pressing and liquid phase sintering to almost full density. During the liquid phase treatment, a certain amount of tungsten is added into the tungsten alloy melt to form microstructure, through which larger tungsten particles (20-60 μm) are dispersed in the matrix alloy.

In order to increase the kinetic energy of projectile core and enhance the ability of piercing armor, the application of high specific gravity tungsten alloy is a successful technical measure in the design and development of shell piercing projectile abroad. At present, in addition to the United States, many countries in Western Europe have adopted tungsten alloy projectile core materials.
