TheKaplan runner of an axial-flow turbine acts like a fan blade and works in a similar way to a common hydro turbine.
Water flows into the center from the horizontal direction around the turbine (radial entry), and then turns to the downward direction to push the runner blade to do work. Because the direction of the water to push the runner blade is parallel to the direction of the rotating wheel shaft, it is called axial flow turbine.
