Stainless steels are a family of iron based alloys that contain a minimum of 10.5% chromium (CR). The presence of chromium creates an invisible surface film that resists oxidation and makes the material passive or corrosion resistant (stainless). There are multiple families of stainless steel which are designed for various applications and uses. Stainless grades can be further modified to meet various processing, corrosion, temperature and strength conditions.
Stainless steel sheet/Plate can be made by cold rolling and hot rolling, including the thickness of 0.31-6.0 mm sheet and 3.0-60 mm plate; common type 201, 202, 304, 304L, 316L, 309S, 310S, 317L, 347, 409L, 410S, 420J1/J2, 430, 446 etc.
Hot-rolled stainless steel, mechanical properties not as good as cold-rolled, but there are good toughness and ductility. Cold-rolled stainless steel plate due to the good hardening, toughness is low.
In order to ensure all kinds of stainless steel yield strength, tensile strength, elongation and hardness and other mechanical properties to meet the requirements, prior to delivery must be stainless steel annealing, solution treatment, aging heat treatment.
Applications:
Although Alloy 409 is designed principally for the automotive exhaust industry, it has been successfully used in other industrial applications as well. Some examples of applications that call for Alloy 409 include:
- Automotive exhaust systems
- Catalytic converters
- Mufflers
- Tailpipes
- Farm equipment
- Structural support and hangers
- Transformer cases
- Furnace components
- Heat exchanger tubing
Standards:
- ASTM/ASME: UNS S40900
- EURONORM: FeMi35Cr20Cu4Mo2
- DIN: 2.4660
Corrosion Resistance:
- Resists atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion
- In most atmospheres a light surface rust will form which inhibits further corrosion but makes the surface less appealing
Heat Resistance
- Generally classified as resistant to scaling in intermittent service up to 1499oF (815oC ) and up to 1247oF (675oC) in continuous service
Weldability
- Readily weldable
- Pre-heat of 302 to 500oF (150 to 260oC) is recommended
- Post-weld annealing at 1400 to 1499oF improved weld ductility
- Post-weld annealing is not required when welding thin sections
- Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded without filler metal
