Cerium oxide is produced by the calcination of cerium oxalate or cerium hydroxide. Ultra high purity and high purity compositions improve both optical quality and usefulness as scientific standards.  In steel manufacturing it is used to remove free oxygen and sulfur by formingHigh Purity (99.999%) Cerium Oxide (CeO2) Powder stable oxysulfides and by tying up undesirable trace elements, such as lead and antimony. It is considered to be the most efficient glass polishing agent for precision optical polishing.

It is suitable for glass manufacturing , as an oxidant, ferrous ions are oxidized to ferric ions, making the color of glass colorless.
