Disadvantages:
- 1. Small errors in component placement are corrected automatically as the surface tension of molten solder pulls components into alignment with solder pads. (On the other hand, through-hole components cannot be slightly misaligned, because once the leads are through the holes, the components are fully aligned and cannot move laterally out of alignment.)
- 2. Better mechanical performance under shock and vibration conditions(partly due to lower mass, and partly due to less cantilevering)
- 3. Lower resistance and inductance at the connection, consequently, fewer unwanted RF signal effects and better and more predictable high-frequency performance.
- 4. Better EMC Performance(lower radiated emissions) due to the smaller radiation loop area(because of the smaller package) and the lesser lead inductance.
- 5. Fewer holes need to be drilled. (Drilling PCBs is time-consuming and expensive.)
SMT Applications:
Although it is possible to use some SMT components for home construction, great care is required when soldering them. Additionally even the ICs having a wide pin spacing may be difficult to solder.
Those with fifty or more pins cannot be soldered without special equipment. They are intended only for large scale manufacturing. Even when working on boards that have already been built great care is needed. However these SMT components offer great cost savings to manufacturers and this is why they have been adopted. Fortunately for the home constructor, traditional leaded components that can be soldered manually are still widely available and offer a much better solution for home construction.
