Brief Introduction of  Geocell Confinement System

Geocell is a kind of three-dimensional reticulated cell structure, which is made of REINFORCED HDPE sheet material and welded by high-speed welding. Generally by ultrasonic needle welding. Due to engineering needs, some holes are drilled on the diaphragm. It can stretch freely, shrink and fold when transporting, open and fill with earth rock or concrete material when in use, forming a structure with strong lateral restriction and large stiffness. It can be used as cushion to treat soft foundation and increase the bearing capacity of foundation. It can also be laid on the slope to form slope protection structure, and can also be used to build retaining structure.

Geocell is a kind of engineering data which is widely used and engineering mechanical function has been improved. It has the advantages of flexible expansion, small transportation volume, convenient connection and fast construction speed. It has been used in some foreign projects for a long time, and geocell manufacturers have been gradually promoting it in recent years. It is mainly used in soft foundation treatment of engineering, foundation bed reinforcement of railway and highway, greening of river slope, jumping bridge head of bridge joint, greening of river dam slope, reinforcement and anti-corrosion, etc.

Geocell Confinement System history:

The Army Corp of Engineers invented 3D geocelluar grids in the 1970’s. The geocell was designed for quick installation on beaches for amphibious beach assaults. It could be stored and moved in a very compact form, expanded and filled with sand, and ready at an instant for supporting vehicles, which would otherwise get stuck in the sand. The geocells were also used extensively in Desert Storm. Soldiers would spread the geocells out in the desert, fill cells with sand, and drive tanks and trucks on them. They would even land planes on them! The geocells could easily be removed when no longer needed.

Application of Geocell Confinement System:

Geocell has the functions of filtration, drainage, isolation, reinforcement, seepage prevention and protection. In recent years, the reinforcement function has been applied more and more, and its application field has gradually expanded. However, this technology is not widely used in China, and it is in the promotion stage, especially in large and medium-sized projects. At present, geocell is mainly used in railway and other projects, but also gradually used in flood dike, cofferdam, inland port wharf and other water conservancy projects. In soil retaining wall, the tensile strength of geocell and its restriction on lateral displacement of soil will greatly affect the stability of soil itself.
