During this "exfoliation" process, raw flakes expand 8 to 30 times their original volume into lightweight, accordion-like particles. It is known for being sterile, odorless, pH-neutral, and highly absorbent, holding water and essential nutrients for plants, making it a popular horticultural potting amendment. Beyond agriculture, its excellent fire resistance and thermal insulation properties render it useful in construction materials, such as fireproof plaster, lightweight concrete, and roof insulation.
