Product Description
Cylindrical Direct Reduced Iron Plant Overview
Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) is produced through the direct reduction of iron ore in solid state using carbon monoxide and hydrogen derived from natural gas or coal. This industrial process occurs within a temperature range of 800-1050°C, where reducing gases react with iron oxides to produce metallic iron.
Key Process Characteristics
The metallization degree—measuring conversion of iron oxide to metallic iron—typically reaches 92-96% in DRI processes. This high metallization makes DRI an excellent input material for steel production, offering cost advantages over traditional integrated steel plants.
Plant Features & Applications
Integration with Steel Production
Most gas-based direct reduction plants operate as part of integrated steel mini-mills, strategically located adjacent to electric arc furnace (EAF) facilities. DRI can be charged to EAFs either hot or cold, providing operational flexibility.
Distribution & Usage
Some steel companies transport DRI from captive reduction plants to remote steel mills, while a smaller volume is marketed to third-party manufacturers.
