Expanded clay (LECA) is a lightweight aggregate manufactured from naturally occurring clay. It is non-toxic, disease free, chemically inert and has a neutral pH. It is used for a variety of applications including; a construction aggregate in lightweight concrete castings, floors and panels and as a loose lightweight fill. It is also used extensively in Green Roof systems as an additive to hydroponic systems as an eco friendly Horticultural Media.

Leca is initial letters for: Light Expanded Clay Aggregate.

Leca consists of small, lightweight, bloated particles of burnt clay. The thousands of small, air-filled cavities give Leca its strength and thermal insulation properties.

The base material is plastic clay which is extensively pretreated and then heated and expanded in a rotary kiln. Finally, the product is burned at 1100 °C-1250°C to form the finished Leca product.
