Seawater desalination uses reverse osmosis membrane, which is a kind of membrane without pores, also called semi-permeable membrane. It is not the principle of screening, but the principle of reverse osmosis. A membrane that is selective to the substance that passes through is called a semi-permeable membrane. Generally, the dilute solution and the concentrated solution of the same volume should be placed between each other in a container with a semi-permeable membrane in the middle. The solvent in the dilute solution will naturally pass through the semi-permeable membrane and flow to the side of the concentrated solution.
The liquid level on the solution side will be higher than the liquid level of the dilute solution by a certain height, forming a pressure difference and reaching a state of osmotic equilibrium, so that the pressure difference is the osmotic pressure. The size of the osmotic pressure depends on the type of the concentrate, and the concentration and temperature have nothing to do with the properties of the semipermeable membrane. The flow direction of the solvent is opposite to the original permeation direction. This process is called reverse osmosis.
The reverse osmosis membrane used for seawater desalination can intercept cations such as calcium, magnesium and sodium, and impurities such as chloride and sulfate in the seawater, allowing the water to pass through. It adopts cross-flow filtration, and the wider flow channel guarantees its pollution resistance performance. However, it is still necessary to periodically regenerate the membrane with a special cleaning agent.
