Ductless Fume Hoods: Key Considerations

Ductless fume hoods are self-contained systems that remove fumes and particles using carbon filters. They are easy to install and cost-effective since no ductwork is required. However, they are not suitable for all applications.

1. Application Suitability

Ductless fume hoods are best for:

• Light-duty applications
• Small chemical volumes (≤ 500 ml)
• Limited types of chemicals

They are not suitable for:

• High-temperature processes (e.g., acid digestion)
• Large chemical volumes
• Unknown or multiple chemical types

In these cases, a ducted fume hood is recommended.

2. Chemical Compatibility

Performance depends on selecting the right filter. Common GCC filters include:

• HEPA (for particles)
• Organic (for organic vapors)
• Acid/Sulfur
• Ammonia/Amine
• Formaldehyde
• Mixed Bed
• Radioisotope

3. Limitations

Some chemicals cannot be effectively filtered, such as:

• Highly volatile solvents (e.g., methanol)
• Special hazard chemicals (e.g., perchloric acid)

Higher chemical usage also reduces filter lifespan.

4. Recommendation

Always confirm chemical compatibility with a specialist. Proper selection of filters and usage conditions is critical for safety.

Exhaust Principle

1. Dirty room air is drawn into the front of the fume hood.
2. Room air mixes with potentially contaminated air from chamber and is pulled upward by the bulding exhaust.
3. Air split at back of hood increases exhaust and reduces turbulence.
4. Contaminated air drawn from fume hood by building exhaust fan and leaves through air stacks on room
