Tinplate (Chinese Pinyin: ma kou tie),or SPTE in English terminology,is a kind of
cold-rolled,low-carbon thin steel plate or steel tape electroplated with pure tin for
commercial use. Tin is corrosion and rust-proof. Tinplate thus combines the strength
and formability of steel and the corrosion resistance,solderability and pleasing
appearance of tin to offer a new material that is resistant to corrosion, non-toxic,
highly strong and ductile.
Tinplate is a kind of steel plate with tin-coating, which gives it strong resistance to
rust. An old and popular Chinese term for it is “ma kou tie” , which bears similarity
in pronunciation with that of Macao. People believe that the first tinplate for
manufacturing food cans was imported from Macao, hence it was named
“Macao tie (steel)”. Another theory of the name has something to do with the
traditional Chinese kerosene lamp, whose cap,made of tinplate, looks like horse
mouth, which is literally what “ma kou” means in Chinese.
