This zirconia ceramic tiny plate and tube has yttria for compressive strength, so it won’t crack or lose shape when pushed together. Used to bear loads, it’s the strongest ceramic at room temperature. It’s crack tolerant, meaning if it does crack it won’t shatter and will still carry loads safely. This material insulates heat well, but won’t withstand temperature shifts as well as ceramics such as alumina and silicon nitride. It has excellent heat and corrosion resistance, though may corrode from hydrofluoric and sulfuric acid.

Able to stand up to wear, chemicals, and cracks, this material is often used in the oil and gas industry. Use it as deep well or valve parts—it resists scrapes from particles in waste acids and other chemical slurries. Also used as rollers or guides to form metal tubes, this material handles frequent contact with molten metal.
