Understanding Particulate Matter (PM)
Particulate air pollution consists of solid and liquid particles suspended in air, categorized as coarse (10-2.5 µm), fine (1-2.5 µm), and ultrafine (<1 µm) particles. PM10 includes particles smaller than 10 µm such as dust, pollen, and mold spores, while PM2.5 refers to particles smaller than 2.5 µm including combustion particles, organic compounds, and metals.
The measurement scale is hierarchical: PM10 contains PM2.5 and PM1.0, while PM2.5 contains PM1.0. For perspective, human hair has a diameter of 50-70 µm and a grain of sand measures approximately 90 µm.
