Closed suction system describes the use of a sterile suction catheter enclosed in an outer plastic sheath, which allows the same catheter to be used multiple times without disconnecting the patient from their breathing system.
Closed suction enables a clinician to clear the lungs of secretions whilst maintaining ventilation and minimising contamination with the least possible disruption to the patient.
