A laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is a supraglottic airway device developed by Arndt Schaldach in 1980. It consists of an oval silicone cup with a soft rubber flange at the top that sits above the glottis. The LMA is inserted through the mouth and into the pharynx where it forms a low-pressure seal around the base of the tongue to prevent aspiration.
