How Air Springs Interrupt Vibration Transmission?
The core principle of using air springs for vibration isolation is to convert vibration energy into controlled pneumatic movement. When a device vibrates, energy is transferred through its infrastructure. A suitable air spring can act as a mechanical low-pass filter, allowing slow movements (such as stabilization and thermal expansion) while resisting high-frequency vibrations. A rubber bellows filled with compressed air deforms elastically under load. This deformation absorbs and dampens the applied kinetic energy. The natural frequency of the system determines which vibrations are damped or amplified. Vibration isolation is achieved when the excitation frequency is at least 1.4 times higher than the natural frequency of the air spring. This makes gas springs very effective for machines, presses, and precision instruments.
