Glass curtain walls is lightweight aluminum-framed facades housing glass, a building envelope that is intended to support only its own weight and withstand the effects of environmental forces such as wind. It is not intended to support the weight of a roof or floor. Instead, gravity loads and wind resistance transfer from the surface to the building’s floor line. Curtain wall systems range from standard prefabricated systems to specialized custom wall units. Increased costs often come with additional customization and larger sizing.

Double-skin curtain wall otherwise called ventilation curtain wall or respiration type curtain wall, is composed of outer curtain wall, inner curtain wall, sunshade, air inlet and air outlet. Compared with traditional curtain wall, its outstanding feature is that one ventilation air exchange layer is formed between inside and outside layers, which promises great thermal break performance, the energy consumption is therefore much lowered, meanwhile, it ensures good ventilation, proper light and humidity which dramatically improve the living comfortability.

Basically, double-skin facade is classified according to the structure of the ventilation layer, one is internal cycle DSF and the other is external cycle DSF. For internal cycle DSF, its outer glass layer is generally formed by thermal break extrusion and insulated glass, its inner layer is generally formed by single-glass or opening window, and the external cycle DSF is the other way around. Both have great benefits in terms of sun-shading, sound insulation and comfortability, but the external cycle DSF stands out in energy-saving.
