β2-microglobulin is a small molecular globulin produced by lymphocytes, platelets, and polymorphonuclear leukocytes. It has a molecular mass of 11800 and a single-chain polypeptide composed of 99 amino acids. It is widely present in plasma, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, In saliva and colostrum. The synthesis rate of normal human β2-microglobulin and the release amount from the cell membrane are quite constant. β2-microglobulin can be freely filtered from the glomerulus, and 99.9% is absorbed in the proximal renal tubules and in the renal tubular epithelial cells.
