β 2-Mg overview

β2-microglobulin is a small molecule of globulin produced by lymphocytes, platelets, and polykaryotic leukocytes. The molecular weight is 11800. It is a single chain polypeptide composed of 99 amino acids. It is widely found in plasma, urine, cerebrospinal fluid and saliva. In normal humans, the synthesis and release of β2-microglobulin from the cell membrane is fairly stable. β2-microglobulin can be filtered from the glomerulus, and 99.9% of β2-microglobulin can be absorbed from the proximal gastrointestinal renal ducts. Normally, the amount of β2 microglobulin excreted is small because it can be destroyed by the breakdown of epithelial cells in the renal tubules.
