BNP Overview

BNP is mainly synthesized and secreted by ventricular myocytes, and the changes of ventricular load and wall tension are the main conditions to stimulate BNP secretion. BNP can promote the excretion and urination of sodium, has a strong vasodilation effect. B-type natriuretic peptide is significantly increased in patients with atrial fibrillation and heart failure. BNP is one of the most common biomarkers of heart failure in clinical application.

There are two ways to clear BNP: one is mediated by the C-type receptor of the natriuretic peptide family, which is degraded by lysosomes after being endocytosed into the cell; the other is degradation by neutral endopeptidase (NEP).
