Brewster Windows are uncoated substrates that can be used in series as polarizers, or to clean up a partially polarized beam. When positioned at Brewster's Angle, the P-polarized component of the light enters and exits the window without reflection losses, while the S-polarized component is partially reflected. The graph to the right shows reflectance for both S- and P-polarization through UV fused silica at 633 nm. The 20-10 scratch-dig surface quality and λ/10 transmitted wavefront error of our Brewster windows make them an ideal choice for laser cavities.

 

Due to its broad transmission range and opacity in the visible portion of the spectrum, germanium is well suited for IR laser applications. As indicated by the plots in the Graphs tab, germanium also acts as a longpass filter for wavelengths greater than 2 µm. In addition, germanium is inert to air, water, alkalis, and many acids. Germanium's transmission properties are highly temperature sensitive; in fact, the absorption becomes so large that germanium is nearly opaque at 100 °C and completely non-transmissive at 200 °C.

 

 

Attention

▶If the incident polarization state is other than P-polarized light, the transmission losses occur due to reflection at the front and back surfaces.
▶If contamination exist on the entrance surface or the exit surface, the surface reflection may occur even for the incident P polarized light.
▶If the incident angle deviates slightly from the Brewster angle, surface reflection occurs.
