Description

Drilling is a basic method of hole processing. Drilling is often carried out on drilling machines and lathes, but can also be carried out on boring machines or milling machines. Commonly used drilling machines include bench drilling machines, vertical drilling machines and radial drilling machines.

Technological characteristics of drilling
(1) The two cutting edges of the twist drill are symmetrically distributed on both sides of the axis. When drilling, the radial resistance forces are balanced with each other, so it is not as easy to bend as a single-edged tool.
(2) When drilling, the cutting depth reaches half of the hole diameter, and the metal removal rate is high.
(3) The drilling process is semi-closed. The drill bit extends into the workpiece hole and occupies a large space. The chips are wide and often spiral. However, the size of the chip flute of the twist drill is limited, so chip removal is difficult, and the hole has been machined. The wall is often scratched due to the squeeze friction of the chips, which makes the surface roughness Ra value larger.
(4) When drilling, the cooling conditions are poor and the cutting temperature is high, therefore, the cutting speed is limited and the productivity is affected.
(5) Drilling is rough machining, and its machining economic accuracy grade is IT13～IT11, and its surface roughness is Ra50～12.5μm. It is generally used for processing of less demanding holes (such as bolt passage holes, lubricating oil passage holes, etc.) or pre-processing of high-precision holes.
