Ferrotitanium

Ferrotitanium is an alloy of iron and titanium, containing 10% to 20% iron, 45% to 75% titanium, and sometimes a small amount of carbon. It is used as a purifier for steel in the steelmaking process; titanium is highly reactive with sulfur, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, forming insoluble compounds that separate in the slag, thereby being used for deoxidation and sometimes for desulfurization and denitrification. In the steelmaking process, the addition of titanium can produce a metal with a finer grain structure. Ferrotitanium can be made by mixing sponge titanium (titanium sponge) and scrap with iron and then melting it in an induction furnace. Ferrotitanium powder can also be used as a fuel in certain pyrotechnic compositions.
