In steelmaking, ferrotitanium acts as a deoxidizer, degasser, and carbon-sulfur stabilizer. Titanium deoxidation in the production of killed steel reduces segregation in the upper part of the ingot, improving steel quality and ingot yield. Titanium combines with nitrogen dissolved in the molten steel to form stable titanium nitride, eliminating nitrogen's adverse effects on steel properties.
Titanium reacts with sulfur in the molten steel to form titanium sulfide, preventing the formation of iron sulfide, which causes hot shortness. Titanium combines with carbon to form highly stable titanium carbide, whose particles inhibit grain growth in steel, refining the steel structure, and increasing its strength.
The chemical affinity between titanium and carbon is greater than that of chromium and carbon. Adding ferrotitanium to stainless steel to fix carbon eliminates chromium depletion at the grain boundaries of stainless steel, improving its corrosion resistance.
