The production of raw silicon uses the carbothermal method, which involves smelting silicon dioxide and carbonaceous reducing agents in an arc furnace. This results in silicon purity of about 97% to 98%, which is generally suitable for metallurgy. If the silicon grade is higher, further refining is required to remove impurities, resulting in metal silicon with a purity of 99.7% to 99.8%.
China, Brazil, Norway, the United States, and France are the world's major producers of metal silicon. Due to resource advantages, China has low-cost, high-quality metal silicon raw materials, and metal silicon production is mainly concentrated in China. In 2020, China's metal silicon production ranked first globally, accounting for about 69.3%; followed by Brazil and Norway, with production shares of 7.3% and 6.6% respectively.
