Requirements for carbon additives in converter steelmaking
In converter smelting of medium and high carbon steel grades, petroleum coke with very little impurities is used as a carbon additive. The requirements for carbon additives for top-blown converter steelmaking are that the fixed carbon should be high, the ash, volatile matter and sulfur, phosphorus, nitrogen and other impurity contents should be low, and it should be dry, clean and with moderate particle size. Its fixed carbon ωC≥96％, volatile matter≤1.0％, ωS≤0.5％, moisture≤0.5％, and the particle size is 1～5mm; if the particle size is too fine, it is easy to be burned off; if too coarse, it floats on the surface of the molten steel and is not easy to be absorbed by the molten steel.
