Once manganese oxide powder is obtained, it undergoes electrolysis to extract pure metallic manganese. The key equipment used in this process includes:
- Electrolytic cell
- Anode and cathode
- Aluminum electrode
- Electrolyte solution (commonly ammonium chloride)
- Power supply
In the electrolytic cell:
- Manganese dioxide is introduced into a molten ammonium chloride solution.
- At the cathode, manganese dioxide is reduced to manganese oxide and then further reduced to form pure metallic manganese.
- At the anode, oxygen is released and can be recycled into the electrolyte solution.
