Electrolytic Manganese (EM or EMM for Electrolytic Manganese Metal) is a high-purity form of manganese metal produced through an electrolytic process.

• Purity: It is defined by its extremely high purity, typically 99.7% to 99.9% manganese.
• Form: It is usually produced in the form of brittle flakes or sometimes as a powder. This brittle nature is due to its high purity and specific crystal structure.
• Production Process: The process involves leaching manganese ore (often with sulfuric acid) to create a manganese sulfate solution. This solution is then purified to remove impurities before being fed into an electrolytic cell. Inside the cell, an electric current is passed through the solution, causing pure manganese metal to deposit onto the cathode. The metal is then stripped from the cathode, resulting in the characteristic flakes.

The key advantage of this method is its ability to produce manganese metal of a much higher purity than traditional smelting methods (like blast or electric arc furnaces), which is necessary for many of its advanced applications in alloys and chemicals.
