The production of ferrovanadium is a pyrometallurgical process, typically using an electric arc furnace. There are two main methods:

Aluminothermic Reduction Process (Most Common):
- Raw Materials: Vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅), aluminum powder, and iron scrap or mill scale
- Process: The materials are mixed and charged into a furnace. The reaction is highly exothermic (it creates its own intense heat). The aluminum reduces the vanadium from its oxide, and the resulting molten vanadium combines with the iron to form ferrovanadium, which sinks to the bottom of the furnace. The lighter aluminum oxide slag floats on top and is tapped off.
- Reaction: 3 V₂O₅ + 10 Al -> 6 V + 5 Al₂O₃ + Heat

Siliconthermic Reduction Process:
- Similar to the above but uses ferrosilicon as the reducing agent instead of aluminum. It is often used for lower-grade ferrovanadium or as part of a two-stage process.
The resulting ferrovanadium is typically supplied in lump or crushed form with common grades being FeV80 (80% V) and FeV50 (50% V).
