Metallurgical grade Silicon Carbide with 88% purity is the "workhorse" of the steel and foundry industry. While SiC 90 is used for ultra-high purity applications, SiC 88 offers the perfect balance of performance and economy for standard carbon steel and gray iron production.
The deoxidation process using SiC 88 is highly exothermic, providing "chemical heat" to the furnace. This helps maintain the molten steel temperature during alloy additions, reducing the electricity consumption of the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF).
The 1-3mm size is ideal for ladle furnace (LF) additions. Because of its high density compared to slag, it penetrates the slag-metal interface quickly, ensuring that the Silicon and Carbon are absorbed by the metal rather than burning off on the surface.
In the casting industry, SiC 88 acts as a potent nucleating agent. It promotes the formation of graphite flakes and nodules, significantly reducing the "chill" (hard spots) in thin-walled castings.
