How do you prepare galvanized steel for painting?
Begin by removing surface contaminants with abrasive pads or brushes to prevent the zinc surface from being restored. Once scrubbed, the surface is given a hot detergent wash and rinsed with fresh, clean water. Once everything is dry, painting can begin.
What happens to galvanized steel when wet?
Zinc prevents oxygen and water from reaching the steel beneath. It does this by first forming a zinc oxide layer on the surface. When there's moisture present that turns into zinc carbonate. This gives the metal a dull gray patina that's insoluble in water and stops any further chemical changes.
