Does galvanised steel need to be primed before painting?

Does galvanizing prevent rust?
Galvanisation or galvanization (or galvanizing as it is most commonly called) is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to iron or steel, to prevent rusting.
What happens to galvanized steel when wet?
Zinc prevents oxygen and water from reaching the steel beneath. It does this by first forming a zinc oxide layer on the surface. When there's moisture present that turns into zinc carbonate. This gives the metal a dull gray patina that's insoluble in water and stops any further chemical changes.
Why you shouldn't weld galvanized steel?
When galvanized steel is welded, the zinc coating at and around the weld burns away, leaving the area uncoated and unprotected. As a result, the unprotected bare weld could suffer from expedient weld failure.
