Cold rolling is a processing method that involves pressing metal through rollers at a temperature lower than the recrystallization temperature of the material. Depending on the particular processes used, this can increase the yield strength and hardness of the steel by as much as 20%. It can also reduce grain size, improve surface finish, and hold tighter tolerances. However, because the material is kept below the recrystallization temperature, cold rolling is labor-intensive and produces thinner sheets than hot rolling.
